Alfie Trailer Analysis

The themes that are recurrent throughout this trailer are women, sex, clubbing and fun. If we analyse closer, we see that Alfie’s life, quite similar to Nicks, is lived in a hedonist way.

The fast cuts between different shots of women show how fast Alfie moves onto different women, therefore illustrating his womaniser reputation and image.

The colour scheme of black and white elucidate his desire to stay classy in order to attract women. The trailer does begin with a massive sign saying “Desire” which epitomises one of Alfie’s needs in life- linking to Maslow’s hierarchy of needs.

The mise en scene of the trailer clearly reveal Alfie’s life of class in the great apple that is New York. The use of Alfie’s smart costume gives off the message that looks can be deceiving and that although he is dressed smartly, he is definitely not the man women would want to count on. The costumes of the women in this trailer clarify their seductiveness and wear statement colours like red and black that obviously attract Alfie towards them.

The use of synchronous music with the footage is very helpful in allowing the audience to picture a clear image of a British man in New York; a lot of fun.

Alfie’s mode of address and use of rather formal language here establishes his good manners; obviously a tool to attract more women. However, good manners doesn’t get you anywhere and it is clear that Alfie will learn a lesson in this film.
